[Mt. Washburn View]

Mt. Washburn, Yellowstone National Park, WY June 26, 2002.

At 10,243 ft., Mt. Washburn is one of the highest points in Yellowstone. There are two ways up, both following old roads (one is still in use by service vehicles). I walked up from Dunraven Pass (8,873 ft.). The road is visible on the ridge in the foreground. If you look closely, you can see someone headed back to Dunraven Pass.

The view here is to the south, toward Yellowstone Lake. Mt. Sheridan (10,305 ft.) and the Red Mountains are easily visible. Sheridan is the broad snow-covered mountain just left of center. You can see all the way to the Tetons, over 75 miles away. They jut up to the right of Mt. Sheridan. The “fissure” in the lower middle portion of the picture is the Yellowstone Gorge (Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone).
